Class Expectations Handout
World History 1000 B.C. - Present
Ms. Kristin Heinowski
Dear parents and students,
I am very excited for the start of the new school year! This semester in World History, we will be exploring thousands of years of history, from the Ancient Greeks and other early civilizations to modern day society. But, how do we fit thousands of years of history into a single class? Undoubtedly, this can seem challenging and, perhaps, even daunting; but in this class, we will find ways to make connections, see larger trends, and understand the importance of the world’s history and its impact on our world today. I am looking forward to a great semester with all of you!
Sincerely,
Kristin Heinowski

Grades
Students’ grades will be weighted based on formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments will include class work, homework, and daily assignments and activities. Summative assessments are cumulative assessments that represent an understanding of the larger concepts and will include essays, presentations, unit projects, and unit tests. Participation will also be considered in the students’ grades (see section below).
Marking Period Grade:
Formative Assessments 40%
Summative Assessments 50%
Participation 10%
Semester Grade:
First marking period 30%
Second marking period 30%
Third marking period 30%
Final Exam 10%
Participation
As previously stated, participation in class is worth 10% of the students grade each marking period. For me, participation means actively being part of the class.
Examples of participation:
Raising your hand and contributing to class discussions
Asking questions
Contributing during small group activities and discussions
Actively paying attention and taking notes
Late Homework Policy
Each day an assignment is late, it will be docked 10% of its points. After 5 days, the assignment will not be accepted and it will receive a 0.
Students who miss a homework assignment due to an excused absence will have the same number of days to make up the assignment as the number of days they were absent. (For example, if a student was absent for 3 days, she will have 3 days to make up the assignment without being docked points).
Extra Credit Opportunities
Extra credit is very rare in my classroom. However, throughout the semester, students will be given various small opportunities to receive extra credit, such as by answering a question at the end of a test or by doing a supplemental writing activity. Students should take advantage of these opportunities, as there will be no extra credit offered at the end of the semester.
Extra Help
Cougar Hour: Once a week, students are given the opportunity to get extra help from their teachers. Students need to get a pass from a teacher prior to the Cougar Hour and every student is required to be with a teacher. Students are expected to make the most out of their Cougar Hour and take advantage of this opportunity to receive extra help.
After School Help: I will be available to help students after school until 3:00 pm. Please stop by if you have any questions or need any extra help.
